Blue Matter is a rapidly growing management consultancy specializing in strategy and execution, primarily in the biopharmaceutical industry. We partner with our clients to help them achieve commercial success across the lifecycle of their products, portfolios, and organizations. Our project types include new product planning, launch strategy and execution, portfolio planning, communications and creative services strategy and execution, and disease area strategy. The majority of our work is in specialty therapeutics, with oncology and rare diseases as specific areas of expertise.

We have a unique entrepreneurial culture and invest in building Blue Matter to be one of the best places to work. We have a strong global presence with offices in the US (San Francisco, New York, and Boston), Europe (London, Zurich, and Netherlands), and India.

As a Creative Director at our fast-growing agency, you’ll lead the charge in shaping the creative vision and execution of work across our pharmaceutical and life sciences client base. You’ll lead a small, high-performing team in crafting smart, compelling, and compliant creative concepts and tools that drive impact in a regulated environment. This role bridges high-level vision with day-to-day execution—balancing hands-on design and concept development with creative leadership and team mentorship.

You will help define and uphold the creative standards for the agency, collaborate closely with cross-functional partners and clients, and play a pivotal role in defining the creative strategy, visual identity, and voice of the agency itself. If you’re someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment, enjoys wearing many hats, and cares deeply about both the craft and the business, this is the opportunity to help shape a growing agency from the inside out.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead, inspire, and mentor the creative team—guiding concept development, execution, and refinement across a range of digital and print deliverables for an array of pharmaceutical clients
  • Collaborate with Agency leadership to define and execute the long-term creative vision, personality, and identity of the agency
  • Own the agency’s evolving creative vision and standards, ensuring every output meets high-quality expectations and client needs
  • Work hands-on in developing creative concepts, producing and reviewing design work, and providing strategic, visual, and verbal direction
  • Actively participate in brainstorming sessions, provide feedback on in-progress work, and collaborate with team members to shape and evolve ideas
  • Serve as the creative lead for specific client accounts—maintaining strong relationships, aligning work with brand and business objectives, and supporting regulatory requirements (e.g., MLR, ISI, fair balance)
  • Champion creative excellence across the agency, balancing originality, impact, and compliance
  • Work closely with operations, project, and account teams to manage resourcing, team capacity, timelines, and project budgets
  • Support business development by contributing to pitch decks, presenting creative thinking in selling situations, and helping grow client relationships
  • Play an active role in team growth—vetting new hires, identifying emerging needs and opportunities for new capabilities, and helping to shape core service offerings as the agency scales

Desired Experience And Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to lead creative strategy, ideation, and execution across multiple channels—digital, print, presentations, banners, social, and more
  • Prior experience working in the market access space, background in oncology, rare disease, or other specialty pharma spaces is a plus
  • Hands-on proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, PowerPoint, and other relevant tools
  • Exceptional visual design skills and the ability to give clear, constructive feedback to creative teams
  • Strong track record of mentoring creative teams and fostering professional growth
  • Skilled in building relationships with clients, internal teams, and external partners
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills
  • Experience supporting new business pitches, presenting and selling creative ideas to clients, and contributing to the growth of an agency or business unit
  • Comfortable shifting between high-level thinking and hands-on design, as needed, in a collaborative organizational environment that values flexibility and accountability
  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical marketing and regulatory constraints (MLR, ISI, fair balance, referencing)
  • A strong understanding of brand strategy and its role in creative execution

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in creative roles, including at least 3 years in a senior or leadership capacity (prior agency and pharma experience strongly preferred)
  • Strong portfolio showcasing conceptual thinking, brand development, and multichannel execution (digital, print, presentations, banners, emails, etc.)
  • Experience building or leading teams in a startup or growing small agency environment
  • Experience managing freelancers or vendors
  • Familiarity with the market access space including key access trends and terminology

Compensation: Base salary range: $125,000 - $200,000 depending on experience. Generous incentive compensation structure.

Benefits Package:

  • 401k - generous employer match with immediate vesting and financial planning resources
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision coverage options effective day 1 of employment
  • Flexible spending account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Company paid insurances including Short- and Long-Term Disability and Life insurance as well as additional voluntary options
  • Paid parental leave for all new parents
  • Health & Wellness Benefit (e.g., gym memberships; $1000 reimbursement annually)
