BigCommerce, recognized as a "Best Place to Work" in 2025, is seeking a talented Software Engineer II to join our innovative Identity & Access Management (IAM) Team! This is your chance to dive into the dynamic and rapidly expanding e-commerce industry, shaping the future of online business. This full-time position offers the flexibility of being fully remote within the United States.

About The IAM Team & Your Role

As a key member of our Identity and Access Management Team, you'll be at the heart of our platform's security. You'll design, build, and enhance the critical services that manage authentication and authorization for everyone who interacts with BigCommerce – our merchants, our partners, and our internal systems.

You'll primarily work with Ruby, with opportunities to engage with Go, Scala, PHP, and React + TypeScript. Our architecture leverages REST APIs and gRPC, microservices, and is supported by a sophisticated suite of internal deployment and cloud infrastructure tools. In this highly collaborative environment, you'll not only expand your technical skill set but also see your innovative ideas through from initial concept to impactful delivery. What You’ll Do

  • Craft High-Quality Solutions: You'll develop reliable, efficient, and maintainable code, contributing to the foundation of our services and focusing on creating positive experiences for our users
  • Contribute to Technical Initiatives & Solve Engaging Challenges: You'll actively contribute to technical tasks and feature development, such as improving system performance and query efficiency, with a focus on security and best practices
  • Support Our Architecture & System Evolution: You'll work with operations, infrastructure, and senior engineering teams to help evolve our systems, contributing to the design and scalability of our back-end services and understanding the technical direction of key product components
  • Engage in Technical Excellence & Understand Strategy: You'll actively participate in technical discussions, helping to explore and understand solutions, architectural approaches, and technical strategies that align with product and business goals
  • Foster a Culture of Quality: You'll uphold and contribute to software quality and security practices. This includes participating in thoughtful code reviews, asking questions, testing, and sharing your knowledge to help elevate team standards and our codebase
  • Collaborate and Grow: You'll work closely with fellow engineers, offering support and sharing knowledge to enhance collective team skills and project success

Who You Are

  • Education: Preferred Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience or completed either a comprehensive software engineering boot camp

  • Solid Experience & Autonomy: You bring 2+ years of software development experience, and while you're growing in your ability to work independently, you'll receive guidance and support as you develop full autonomy.

  • Technical Proficiency:

  • Experience and growing proficiency in Ruby are key to this role.

  • We're also excited if you have familiarity with, or an interest in exploring, TypeScript/React, Scala or Go

  • Development Lifecycle Understanding: You're familiar with continuous integration principles and have experience contributing to various aspects of the development cycle, from initial design through to implementation and ongoing support

  • Scalable Systems Knowledge: You have a foundational understanding of, or a strong interest in developing, high-performance, scalable, and resilient web services and applications. We value your eagerness to learn and grow in this area

  • A Collaborative Spirit: You are a true team player, comfortable working within an Agile/Scrum environment and with diverse stakeholders, team leads, and other groups to foster clear communication and achieve shared goals

  • Problem-Solving Passion: You genuinely enjoy diving into challenging problems and appreciate working within a fun, supportive, and collaborative team setting

  • Thoughtful & Communicative: You are proactive and results-driven, with developing critical thinking abilities and good communication skills that allow you to share ideas clearly

  • Curiosity and Growth Mindset: You are excited by the opportunity to learn new technologies and approaches

  • Helpful Background (Preferred): Previous exposure to or interest in Identity and Access Management is a plus and will help you integrate with the team

(Pay Transparency Range: $92,000.00 - $156,000.00)

The exact salary will be dependent on the successful candidate’s location, relevant knowledge, skills, and qualifications.
