The John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) is a nationally acclaimed visual and performing arts center located in the heart of downtown Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Founded in 1967, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center presents work by diverse artists, from the vernacular to classically trained and from local to global perspectives. JMKAC establishes a community locally and nationally with its rotating, original contemporary art exhibitions, live performances and events, classes, workshops, and on-site preschool.

We are seeking a talented Copywriter and Editor to join our Marketing team to join our Marketing team and play a key part in shaping our voice, strengthening our outreach, and supporting our mission through strategic communication and storytelling.

About The Role

Reporting to the Director of Marketing, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the clarity, accuracy, and quality of our external communications. You will be responsible for proofreading and editing various materials, including digital and print marketing collateral that supports our exhibitions, events, and community outreach efforts. Crafting compelling website content that engages our audience will also be a key aspect of your role.

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, daytime hours, and occasionally Saturday and Sunday to meet staffing and/or event needs. Hybrid and fully remote work options are available.

Successful Candidates Will Have

  • Strong proofreading and editing skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to adapt tone and style for different audiences.
  • Familiarity with digital and print marketing best practices.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Review and proofread a wide range of materials, including digital marketing content and print marketing materials.
  • Write website content and articles for the quarterly member magazine.
  • Ensure all materials adhere to the center's brand voice, style guide, and messaging. Maintain consistency in language, tone, and formatting across various platforms and communication channels.
  • Identify and correct errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting. Provide constructive feedback to content creators to improve the overall quality of communication.
  • Help enhance clarity and impact in written content, offering suggestions for improvements to ensure the messaging is effectively communicated to the target audience.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2-3 years of proven experience as a copywriter, editor, or similar role with a focus on arts, culture, or nonprofit communications.
  • Familiarity with the art world and exhibitions is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable in the Chicago Manual of Style.

The position is office/art gallery-based, and the noise level is usually moderate. May occasionally work inside or outside at events where the noise level could be moderate to loud. Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided where necessary.

This position works at various locations depending on the schedule. This position must be able to commute between locations if needed.
